Private Recap

How to use Private Recap

Recording a meeting, getting the recap, and fixing the few things that go wrong.

Before you start

The first recap downloads about 300 MB with the default models. It happens once, then it works offline. A bigger model you pick in Settings downloads more.

Best in Chrome or Edge. Desktop apps need Chrome or Edge on Windows, or on a Mac with macOS 14.2 or later and Chrome or Edge 142 or later.

Your privacy

Your audio, transcript, and notes stay on this computer. Only sound is recorded. The picture you share is dropped the moment recording starts and is never saved.

The app uses the network for three things:

  • The one-time AI model download.
  • Your account and billing, if you sign in.
  • Anonymous, cookie-less page counts.

Four steps

  1. Choose New recording, pick A browser tab or A desktop app, and press Start recording. Share the meeting tab with the tab audio switch on; for a desktop app, share your “Entire Screen” with the system audio switch on.
  2. Choose Stop & save when the call ends; the recording stays on this computer.
  3. Your recap starts on its own after saving. If you turned that off, open the meeting and choose Generate recap.
  4. Use Copy recap, or Export (Pro) to save Markdown, text, transcript, or audio.

Good to know

  • Your microphone is recorded even while you are muted in the meeting app. Use Mute mic to pause it, or turn off Include microphone audio to leave it out. Headphones give the cleanest recording.
  • To record a desktop app on a Mac, your browser needs two permissions: screen recording and system audio recording. Say yes whenever macOS asks. Both are in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording; after changing either there, quit and reopen the browser.
  • The Upload tab takes a file you already have, up to one hour and 200 MB.
  • You can pause and resume a recording while a long meeting runs.
  • Not happy with one section? Re-generate that section on its own.
  • Free recordings stop at five minutes, and Pro lifts that limit.
  • Free keeps one meeting signed out, three signed in; Pro has no cap.
  • Customizations holds your own templates and extra prompt instructions.

If something goes wrong

The recording has no sound
Make sure the share window’s audio switch is on: the tab audio switch for a tab, the system audio switch for a desktop app. It cannot be changed once recording has started, so stop and start again. For a desktop app, only your computer’s default speakers or headphones are recorded, so set the meeting app’s speaker to the default.
The model download is stuck
Check that you are online and have space left, then start the download from settings and watch it. A part-downloaded model is fetched again rather than used.
The browser refused storage
Install Private Recap as an app, or ask for persistent storage, and the browser stops reclaiming your meetings. The same screen shows how much space the models use.
This browser cannot record meetings or run the AI
Use Chrome or Edge. Advanced settings lists exactly what this browser can and cannot do.
“You’ve reached the free limit”
Free keeps one meeting when signed out and three when signed in. Delete one, or upgrade to Pro for no cap.
Recording stopped by itself at five minutes
Free recordings stop at five minutes. Pro records for as long as you need.
